Some music theft going on (solved)

Posted by Danman87 Feb. 25, 2009 @ 2:46 AM EST

Got a little irritated about that lately. I highly recommend soundtrack artists to check out this guy (link removed) on youtube. He basically posts videos of music and claims it belongs to the Halo Wars soundtrack. I've sent 2 messages to him but without any answer, so I decided to make people aware of this violation.

I don't know about the first track but the second one is definitely one of my pieces. I want to thank people for showing this to me and highly suggest every other artist to check out his videos, you might find one of your tracks there...

EDIT: First track is Rise of a new King by DukeLukeProd.

EDIT (2): He took the videos down, I removed the links.

Can't you report that to youtube? They should be able to disable the audio on his videos, if not shut his account down altogether.

Amazing music by the way! I'm looking forward to making videos with your work, and I'll be sure to credit you accordingly.
Check out Mario Vs Spartan on youtube, specifically the second video for a brilliant adaption of Entering the Stronghold. Video was made by Genetic Spartan.

Feb. 25, 2009 | 5:12 AM Danman87 responds:

Thank you, I reported it but nothing happened since 5 days. And since these videos have quite an amount of views it's something rather serious.

I'll look out for the vid by the way!

Feb. 25, 2009 | 8:39 AM Tokolos says:

Unacceptable, you should be livid! It takes no more effort to credit an artist than it does to pick your nose. This guy is a chop. And I hope you get it sorted Danman.

Feb. 25, 2009 | 9:32 AM Danman87 responds:

Yep, same oppinion here. But I guess he doesn't intend to give credits since he claims that did it himself (according to his comments)

Feb. 25, 2009 | 4:44 PM Turn360Degrees says:

It's Unfortunate that he didn't give you credit, it seems to be a good bit of publicity.
You should at least take pride in the fact that all the comments seem to praise your song (which personally is my favorite). But to be honest i recommend just giving a link to your site or whatever (stating the song name) on the comments, and just leave it at that. :E

I doubt anything will be done about it really. :( Keep up the good work anyway.

Feb. 26, 2009 | 2:43 PM Danman87 responds:

Well, I don't care much about the credit, rather that he put these tracks under different releations. I commented in the first video of him where he took 3 tracks of mine and earned about 12.000 views, he immediatly removed it. Now he disabled comments whatsoever.

Feb. 25, 2009 | 8:13 PM silencefreedom says:

The video that you showed one of those song is belong to e-studio 's game soundtrack, not halo war 's soundtrack. Your song is "With Gun & Crucifix", that sucker should give the artists credits before do anything else.

Feb. 26, 2009 | 2:45 PM Danman87 responds:

Yep, in fact he should just stay away from doing these things...

Feb. 25, 2009 | 9:22 PM Darioth says:

I really like how this guy has disabled "post comments".

However, I can certainly see how this person's got everybody fooled. Your music is definitely worthy of Halo Wars.

Feb. 26, 2009 | 2:46 PM Danman87 responds:

Haha thanks man, I'd love to compose music for Halo someday. :P

Feb. 26, 2009 | 6:52 AM Assassin2 says:

This has really got my angry. Without sounding overly bias, you're music is exceptional and something I am very lucky to have come across, so much so that I'm always compelled to show it to friends in which they fall in love with it just as much (well, almost)
If you were the kind of person that simply HAS to find a positive out of anything, you could take solace in the fact that people are hearing and enjoying YOUR music, and that people recognized it as yours and informed you.
I for one am ripe pissed about this and I'm not gonna rest until something is done about it.

Feb. 26, 2009 | 2:47 PM Danman87 responds:

Thanks buddy! I'm really thankful for the help, I hope he's going to remove it soon!

Feb. 26, 2009 | 7:31 AM OMGL33TH4X0R says:

I've been trying to find somewhere to report this guy but I can't find where to do it. He disabled comments on his profile because I kept bashing the shit out of him. The little peckerhead.

Feb. 26, 2009 | 2:50 PM Danman87 responds:

Yeah I've seen him disabling comments wherever he could. Although I doubt that bash isn't going to make him stop since there's always the option of removing comments.

Feb. 26, 2009 | 6:25 PM DukeLukeProd says:

Thanks a lot for caring mate, I appreciate it. btw, and this is no joke, I made this song thanks to the inspiration your music gave me, otherwise it probably wouldn't exist.
And irony strikes again - I've just returned from a podium discussion about online piracy (Featuring the proprietor of Pirate Bay) and how it affects the film/music industry and artists...
however
To be perfectly honest I can't get myself to be properly pissed at what this guy did because of all those unlikely events. It's pathetic that he needs to misinform people to get attention, yes, but if people really (really really) want to know who originally did the song (once halo wars is out they might smell something's fishy) they may find the artist eventually, and you'll have a new fan - sounds unlikely, but there's a little section to each Youtube video called "statistics" showing url's with references to it, know what I'm going at? And god knows what other obscure sneaky ways there are for people to eventually find the real artist.

I'll prolly regret reacting so relaxed to this doubtlessly serious issue tomorrow, today has clearly been too long ;)
cheers

Feb. 27, 2009 | 3:18 AM Danman87 responds:

Wow, thanks buddy. Didn't know that :O

It's pretty hard to deal with all that stuff nowadays since there is probably a large amount of copyright violations we're not even aware about. If there's something right in front of our eyes then it would probably be the best thing to do something about it. There are definitely some ways to make traces completely invisible whatsoever, if people are modifying ID3 tags then some tracks could even end up as orphaned work since we can't backtrack a music file that is distributed under a wrong name and title. That might be the worst case and rather unlikely but it's still possible. It's pretty irritating whatsoever if people send you messages and accuse you that you stole your music from some the Halo Soundtrack, that was the thing that got me started.

Feb. 27, 2009 | 1:15 AM spartanninja117 says:

Nice catch man. Maybe if we get enough people to report him, they'll pay attention (even though it should only require one).

While I'm at it, though, I just want to tell you that you are my biggest inspiration for composing movie soundtracks--I'll admit, even more than Hans Zimmer or John WIlliams... I actually haven't started composing seriously yet with DAWs or VSTi--i'm still on Finale-- but you and DukeLukeProd are the main reasons i've begun to look into it!

Feb. 27, 2009 | 3:22 AM Danman87 responds:

Well, it could be pretty hard to get that stuff deleted if I look on the countless films and TV episodes that are hosted on this site.

Thanks for the nice words, I wouldn't compare myself with Williams or Zimmer but I'm glad we were able to give you some inspiration to start! :)

Feb. 27, 2009 | 7:34 AM DukeLukeProd says:

Yeah I agree, you did the right thing to post this here and I'll add a link to my journal too. That guy has done his best to obliterate all traces back to us which is downright perfidious. But one reason why I reacted that way was because all this reminded me of how movie trailer-music is handled - it hardly ever gets referenced anywhere and as a fan you're having a hard time to find the artist. The obvious difference is that we don't get royalties tho :|

btw, that journal-smiley looks a lot like your profile photo, was that intentional? :D

Mar. 3, 2009 | 8:30 AM Danman87 responds:

Haha yes, it probably does. :P

Some libraries like X-Ray Dog are crediting their artists though, seems to become a general trend since other libraries start to give credits as well.

Feb. 27, 2009 | 4:02 PM LichKingz says:

Youtube has this form you can fill out if one of your works has been stolen. I don't know where it is, but it's there.

Mar. 3, 2009 | 8:30 AM Danman87 responds:

Thanks, gotta use it once I find it!

Feb. 28, 2009 | 2:00 AM NekoGirlEli says:

When I first heard your music I was entranced and I keep coming back hoping to hear more of your work. Your music touches deep and has a life source of its own, and I know you probably walked a long path to get where you are today.

For me, while my path is different, I understand the practice required and the studies to be done, and I find it horrible that in one second, a piece you could have worked a lifetime on can be stolen and claimed by someone else.

The feeling put into each piece, the thought and the time dedicated is lost in purpose to these music thieves. They understand not the true value, only their own glory.

I hope this problem gets resolved soon.

Feb. 28, 2009 | 6:57 PM bludragon745 says:

Thats absolutely HORRIBLE, but you can do something about it.

http://news.deviantart.com/article/22 971/

The example shown is for when an image is stolen, but the Digital Millenium Copyright Act isnt only about pictures. They are expected to take off whatever you are reporting. You may have to do a little bit more to find out the informatio nnecessary but i think its worth it. Hope this helps.

Feb. 28, 2009 | 10:05 PM Bahamut0ne says:

It suckls that people are stealing your music, but on a lighter note, what song is that and is it on NG? because it was a very good song!

Mar. 1, 2009 | 4:17 AM SFaPiL2 says:

Copyright Infringement Notification:

http://www.youtube.com/t/dmca_policy

By following those steps youtube SHOULD solve the problem. This "wowfanlover" in youtube used your music to convince users to subscribe to his site (in order to reach a certain number of subscribers... who know why). Quoting this "wowfanlover":

"oh if i keep getting subscribers ill post more." [...stolen stuff I'll add >:o( ]

This guy deserves to get his youtube account removed.

Mar. 1, 2009 | 2:13 PM MachShot says:

Oh sure, if its music with a record lable, YouTube will remove it within 8 min of it's posting without even being notified (I've seen it happen). But after a week of the report they haven't taken down the videos?

Well that finalizes it, YouTube does not give a damn about people, only it's own ass. It pisses me off. Anyway, since I respect you're music so much, I'll see what can be done to not only have his videos infringing on you removed, but his entire channel as well.

Mar. 1, 2009 | 11:07 PM gamerworld14 says:

yeah, i just sent him a message...idk why people do that

Mar. 2, 2009 | 10:40 AM daperson1 says:

Email the youtube admins - do not use the report button on the youtube site, but actually open a help and support ticket therough their site.
That way, you can get into contact with a human more quickly than if you go through the massivley used "flag this video" button.

Alternativley you could be mean and submit your own youtube video featuring your tracks, and possibly those of the other artists who have had their stuff stolen, if they don't mind, crediting them correctly, and boycotting this other chap.

Break out the torches and pitchforks, because with as many people who are fans of you (myself included), there is going to be a mob.

Mar. 2, 2009 | 10:17 PM VKB says:

Danman, I've spoken with this guy on YouTube. It isn't his fault; his friend said that they were songs from Halo Wars, so he uploaded them. He's removed them now. I registered just to let you and everyone else know.

Mar. 3, 2009 | 1:33 AM Cosmos8942 says:

Aha, it has been removed...but he is likely hiding...I say keep an eye out for another video of his that will do the same thing.

Course you all already know this ^^.

Mar. 3, 2009 | 1:34 AM Cosmos8942 says:

Whoops XD, guess perhaps I should have read the more recent post down there XD. But I still say to keep an eye out.

Mar. 3, 2009 | 10:16 AM daperson1 says:

I dropped the guy a polite email yesterday, and this morning he sent me a reply saying he'd take them down.

Not sure if i was the only one bothering him about this, but it would appear that these videos were not actually made by the chap, but instead somebody else sent them to him, and he published them on his youtube channel.

Mar. 30, 2009 | 8:07 PM wanweird says:

So, he took the videos down? Well that's a relief. Whew. Have you checked any other videos of his to make sure that none others have NG music on it?
